The main idea of the project is to try to find certain points, places and situations in Ostrava we think they do not work properly or which do not provide inhabitants with things and services they can. It often concerns the places that nobody wants to use or those which seem not to bring any profit. However, we would not like to restrict this project only to the search for such places but rather find the real uses for them too. The aim is to show that the small changes can cause the big effect in city context.

City Interventions Ostrava 2013

The main idea of the project is to try to find certain points, places and situations in Ostrava we think they do not work properly or which do not provide inhabitants with things and services they can. It often concerns the places that nobody wants to use or those which seem not to bring any profit. However, we would not like to restrict this project only to the search for such places but rather find the real uses for them too. The aim is to show that the small changes can cause the big effect in city context.
‘The city interventions’ is the civic project which does not follow the typical model of distribution of the city procurement from top to bottom (from the authorized institution to the city inhabitants and users). The contribution lies in the fact that each subject reflects different problems in the city. Thus, its confrontation is crucial and basically ‘ideal’. The inhabitants do not wait for appeal to help the city and its surrounding, but they themselves come with suggestions and ideas (the certain places in the city) that would improve environment they live in. Furthermore, they do not expect money for being active and regard their participation as voluntary work. The artistic and archaeological proposals that are formed as parts of the project come from the inner or professional need of its authors. They want to point out to things that do not work in the public space although the solutions for their proper functioning exist and the needs to reveal the potential of places we daily pass through and often do not even notice. The city interventions show other steps and possibilities for the creation of the public space.
The project does not generate profits or promises, but rather develops the discussion about the city that has been existed from time immemorial. But now an impetus for discussion comes from the other side, the discussion is unbiased, financially disinterested and it causes its impartiality and brings benefits for the city. The project also introduces the way how to show other steps and possibilities for the potential creation of the public space. The basic principle of the project is to address the active locals and creative professions (architects, sculptors, painters, street art artists, civil engineers etc.) through a public appeal. These people will suggest the possible solutions how to deal with the problematic city areas, claiming no honorarium for their work. This project is completely independent, nobody can order proposals, and it is based on an individual choice of the city inhabitants. The creators will submit their proposals in two ways – in PDF format for the print and the individual parts as the separate documents. The first type will be used for poster prints of B1 paper size (707 x 1000 mm/ 27.8 x 39.4 in). These posters will be exposed in the gallery of Cultural centre Cooltour at the Black meadow in the city centre for two months. The individual suggestions will be supplemented with texts, visualizations with ground plans, different perspectives, schemes or situations that are readable and comprehensible not only by professionals, but also the general public. During the time of the exposition several evenings will be dedicated to the presentations of the authors’ individual proposals. The second type will be used for the creation of ‘The city interventions 2013’ catalogue.
The catalogue will be published in the edition of 250 pieces and will contain the prologue, the description of the project and the presentations of all exposed proposals including the visualizations and descriptive texts in the Czech and English language. All texts will be written in the Czech as well as English language. The catalogue will be created and launched at the end of the exposition. It will serve as the perfect material for keeping and spreading output of the project for other topical discussions and activities concerning the public space of Ostrava and the city involvement of its inhabitants, but also of other cities or areas in the Czech Republic. The publication will be at participants’ disposal for free and they can come to get copies personally or catalogues will be distributed to the participants of exposition and presentations, authors, partners and associates of interested city institutions by post depending on their previous interest.
The idea of the project ‘The city interventions’ originated in Bratislava in 2007. Two men, Matúš Vallo and Oliver Sadovský (Vall Sadovsky Architects), decided to realize their idea and use their civic and professional initiative. They addressed several colleagues and architectural ateliers in order to choose and suggest the solution how to deal with the public place problematic from the architectural point of view in the centre of Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. The project met an enormous response not only from architects, but also the general public. The concept of the city interventions has gain the universal status and has been used in other cities such as Prague, Brno, Košice. The project is currently running in Jablonec nad Nisou. The printed catalogues were published as a part of the projects realized in Prague and Brno. More information you can find on www.mestskezasahy.cz and www.mestskezasahy.sk/.
